Drew

Drew Deaton

President, CEO


Drew previously held operations, finance, and executive roles within MedMined and CareFusion. He began his career at Ernst and Young, working with entrepreneurial and technology companies. During his time in Research Triangle Park, NC, and Birmingham, AL, he has worked with many venture-based startups as well as large public and private corporations in information technology, biotechnology, software, medical devices, medical services, and healthcare technology. He holds a BS in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and a graduate degree from UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Mark

Marcus Dillavou

Lead Engineer


Marcus has a background in scientific visualization, graphics, and image processing. He previously spent nine years in the Enabling Technology Laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where the original prototype for Virtual Interactive Presence was conceived. Mark currently leads the software and hardware development efforts at VIPAAR. He is a graduate of UAB and holds a BS in Computer Science.

Guthrie

Bart Guthrie, MD

Chief Scientific Officer


Bart has been active in the development of translational technology aimed at improving patient care, and holds several patents in the field. He developed OmniSite, a computer-based image-guided neurosurgical system currently licensed to Integra, Inc. He also directed development of the technology for, and was co-founder of, Emageon, Inc., a successful startup company specializing in medical imaging. He currently P.I.’s several institutional grants that support development of information and surgical technology. He is a practicing neurosurgeon at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Bart holds a BS and MD from UAB, where he did graduate study in biophysics, and performed his surgical training at the Mayo Clinic and Stanford University.

Matt

Matt May

Engineer


Matt has previous experience as a software developer working on robust next-generation genomic sequencing, and is an inventor on three pending U.S. & international patent applications. Within VIPAAR, he's responsible for the company's IP portfolio development, clinical research trials, and product QA. He is also the lead developer of VIPAAR's Manager software for remote metric visualization and analysis. Matt is a graduate of the University of Alabama.

Stan

Stan McDuffie

Director, Clinical Services


Stan has more than 15 years of experience in the the development and delivery of healthcare technology and in the delivery of care in the operating room and emergency department. He began his career by serving in a number of roles at MedMined and CareFusion, including sales, strategy, product management, and outcomes analysis for a novel technology designed to automate the surveillance of healthcare-associated infections. Most recently, he held the role of product manager at MEDSEEK, where he led a team of analysts focused on researching and defining consumer and employee/staff portals within an enterprise eHealth solution. Stan holds a BS in Biology from Birmingham-Southern College and a Master's in Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Troy

Troy Roberson

Technology Architect


Troy has over 20 years of experience in software development and systems architecture. He has worked for aerospace, logistics, manufacturing and communication companies located in the United States, Canada and Italy. In addition to developing large scale, mission-critical systems, he has published a number of award-winning software programs. More recently, he has focused his knowledge and passion for user experience on the mobile device sector. Troy holds a BS in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Mahesh

Mahesh Shenai, MD

Strategic Advisor


Mahesh is a Clinical Instructor in Neurosurgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He has previous research and development experience in the area of cardiac pacemakers, bionanotechnology, and neuromodulation. Mahesh performed the initial proof-of-principle demonstrations of surgical VIP, and authored the Editor's Choice article "Virtual Interactive Presence for Remote Surgical Assistance", published in Neurosurgery. He brings engineering, clinical, and business experience to the VIPAAR team. Mahesh is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University (BS, MSE), and the University of Michigan Medical School (MD). He completed his neurosurgical training at UAB, and is currently completing his MBA at the University of Michigan.

Corey

Corey Shum

Technical Advisor


Corey is the Technical Director of the Enabling Technology Laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where the Virtual Interactive Presence (VIP) prototype was conceived. He has led the research and development of several novel computer graphics systems for medical visualization and training, including the Virtual Patient System and CoreVR. Corey brings his expertise in virtual-reality systems, scientific visualization, real-time computer graphics, high-performance computing, and mixed-reality training systems to the VIPAAR team.
